Day 01 :
Arrival

Upon arrival in San Jose, Costa Rica, you will meet your driver for transfer about 30 minutes to your hotel.

Arrive at the Gran Hotel Costa Rica, an iconic gem in the heart of San Jose. Located on the pedestrian boulevard Avenida Central, the hotel overlooks the National Theatre and is steps from cafés, shops, museums and other top attractions. Colonial beauty meets modern technology in the stylish guest rooms, and the hotel’s signature restaurant features international cuisine and local flavors.

Starting on the East side of San Jose, the first stop is Democracy Place and the National Museum, the Courts, Los Yoses, Hispanidad Fountain and the Rodrigo Facio Campus in the University of Costa Rica. After we have seen the capital’s main attractions, the next stop will be in the impressive Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and the beautiful National Theater where we will have a guided visit through these cultural gems. Then, the tour continues heading to various sites of interest. A brief stop will be made in a beautiful art craft shopping store allowing you to browse through it before returning to your hotel.

Today, you will transfer by ground approximately 3 hours to the Arenal Volcano. Although the volcano is currently in a resting phase, the region offers an abundance of exciting opportunities.

Arrive at the Tabacón Grand Spa & Thermal Resort for overnight. Tabacón features natural hot springs fed by Arenal Volcano. The mineral waters flow through exotic tropical gardens, forming cascades and pools and creating an unforgettable experience. Tabacón offers a continuous complimentary shuttle between the hotel and the resort’s hot springs

In this hands-on tropical cooking experience, Chef Scott Alan and his local chefs offer a fun and entertaining afternoon of a Costa Rican cooking experience. You will learn all about tropical cooking, ingredients, grilling and even cocktails! Enjoy amazing views of Arenal Volcano in a “pura vida” atmosphere while preparing your meals. The class is great for beginners as well as true cooks, so all skill levels are welcome.

You can participate and help prepare the dishes or watch & take notes – the choice is yours.

The sweet smiling face of the Costa Rican sloth is rapidly becoming the iconic symbol of the country’s amazing rainforest wildlife. The Arenal area is well known for its diverse wildlife, including the 2 different sloth species: two-toed sloth and three-toed sloth. You’ll also have the chance to see toucans and the blue jean dart frog. On the search for these three beautiful animals, your guide will drive you around La Fortuna’s beautiful spotting areas for more wildlife. Birds, iguanas and monkeys are among the animals that you might encounter.

Today you will transfer by ground approximately 2 ½ hours to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. This high-elevation forest of dense, chaotic vegetation is great for hiking and wildlife observation – especially bird watching.

This tour gives insight into the world of coffee, chocolate, and sugarcane production in Costa Rica. The tour begins with an introduction to the life cycle of the coffee plant. You’ll learn how coffee cherries are picked, see the way the pulp was originally removed, visit the drying patio and the warehouse. Then, discover the history of the cocoa pod, make your own chocolate using traditional recipes, and taste!

Try the traditional Costa Rican method of extracting sugar cane juice (using el trapiche) and taste test. Finally, return to the restaurant to enjoy a cup of coffee and browse the collection of culinary souvenirs.

Overnight Senda Monteverde.

First Class 4*

With 120 species in bloom, the Monteverde Orchid Garden is home to over a quarter of the world’s orchid species. On a tour of the garden, you’ll learn about the most unusual facets of miniature and micro species as well as larger blooms and hybrids. You’ll smell them and explore the interesting role these flowers play in their ecosystems.

Beautiful they certainly are, but smart too – you might be surprised to find that these intricate little things have developed plenty of curious tricks to survive in the wild.
